Practical Dermatology

Collaborative Approach

Dr. Shayne Reitmeier was trained as a rural family physician and now primarily practices in Winnipeg and Portage la Prairie. His practice reflects a special interest in practical dermatology, supported by additional education to better care for patients in this area. For more advanced or complex cases, he works closely with dermatologists, surgeons, and oncology teams across Manitoba to ensure appropriate, individualized treatment planning. This collaborative, team-based approach allows Dr. Reitmeier to provide comprehensive care while ensuring patients have access to the right expertise at the right time.

Skin Cancer: Screening, Diagnosis, and Management

We support early detection and intervention for skin cancer through thorough, full-skin assessments. Dr. Reitmeier performs detailed examinations of moles, lesions, and other skin changes using tools such as a dermatoscope. When concerning features are identified, biopsies can be performed in-office and sent for pathology review.

Dr. Reitmeier is experienced in identifying and managing common skin cancers, including basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma. By integrating screening, diagnosis, and treatment, patients receive timely, coordinated care that improves the
likelihood of effective outcomes.

Benign Skin Growths

We assess and manage a wide variety of benign skin growths, including but not limited to moles, cysts, lipomas, skin tags, seborrheic keratoses, and other non-cancerous lesions. Depending on the presentation, treatment options may include cryotherapy, electrosurgery, energy-based therapies, or surgical excision. Our approach prioritizes safe and effective removal while minimizing discomfort and optimizing cosmetic outcomes. Ongoing monitoring may also be recommended to support long-term skin health.

Office-Based Procedures

We offer a variety of in-office procedures to support both diagnostic and therapeutic needs. These include skin biopsies for lesion assessment, skin cancer excisions when appropriate, and nail surgery for conditions such as ingrown toenails. We also provide intralesional injections for the treatment of cysts, keloids, and hypertrophic scars, as well as photodynamic therapy for actinic keratosis and other early superficial skin cancers.

Acne

Acne is managed through a combination of approaches tailored to your skin type, severity, and treatment goals. Options may include topical agents such as retinoids, benzoyl peroxide, or topical antibiotics, and oral medications including antibiotics, hormonal therapies, or isotretinoin when appropriate. In addition, private pay options are available to support both active acne and scarring. These may include chemical peels, microneedling, radiofrequency-based treatments, ablative therapy, and photodynamic therapy. The goal is to reduce inflammation, prevent long-term scarring, and support clear, healthy skin.

Rosacea

Rosacea is managed using a combination of treatments tailored to the type and severity of symptoms, which may include redness, flushing, acne-like breakouts, and visible blood vessels. Options include topical and oral medications, as well as lifestyle strategies to help identify and avoid triggers. For those seeking additional support, private options such as microneedling and photodynamic therapy may also help reduce inflammation and improve skin tone.

Hair Loss

We take a comprehensive approach to hair loss by first assessing contributing factors such as genetics, hormonal imbalances, nutritional deficiencies, and underlying medical conditions. Treatment options may include topical agents such as minoxidil, oral medications like finasteride, or private pay therapies including platelet-rich plasma (PRP), microneedling, and exosome-based treatments. Each care plan is individualized, with the goal of supporting regrowth, improving hair density, and addressing patient-specific concerns.

Nail Health

We assess and manage a variety of nail-related conditions, including fungal infections, nail trauma, abnormal nail growth, and ingrown toenails. In-office procedures such as partial or total nail avulsion may be recommended when appropriate, with the goal of relieving pain, minimizing infection risk, and supporting healthy nail regrowth. For certain cases, private options such as platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy may also be considered to support nail matrix health and improve regrowth outcomes.

Warts

We provide comprehensive management for warts on any area of the body, including the hands, feet, face, scalp, body, and genital region. Treatment options may include topical therapies, cryotherapy, and surgical removal for persistent or difficult cases. Each care plan is tailored to the type and location of the wart, with a focus on effective removal and patient comfort. Education on preventing recurrence and transmission is also a key part of our approach.
